Summary:
Nick Carraway moves to New York City in the 1920's from the midwest. He is from a small midwestern town and is looking for wealth and excitment on the east coast. He moves to a community called West Egg and there meets his neighbor Jay Gatsby. On one of his first days in East Egg he visits his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom for dinner. While at this dinner Nick meets Jordan, and he gets somewhat involved with her as the story progresses. Nick also discovers from Jordan the Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, and therefore cheating on Daisy. Soon after this Nick travels with Tom to New York City to an apartment, this, Tom owns just for his affair. At this apartment he throws huge parties with alcohol and music and dancing. While Tom and Myrtle are talking, the topic of marriage comes up. Myrtle wonders aloud when Tom will leave Dasiy and marry her. Tom responds to this by saying that Daisy is Catholic and would never agree to a divorece. This statement is a lie. Dasiy is not Catholic, and Tom says this only to continue with the affair while also having Dasiy as his wife. Tom and Myrtle continue talking and Myrtle begins to make fun of Daisy, Tom responds by hitting Myrtle in the face. Later on in the summer Nick is invited to go to one of Gatsby's Saturday night parties. He accepts the invitation and goes to the party. At the party Nick meets Jordan and hangs out with her for most of the night. As the party rolls on Nick notices how huge the party acctually is and wonders how Gatsby does it. Nick and Jordan later run into Gatsby. At first Nick does not even realize that he is talking to Gatsby until they introduce themselves farther into the conversation. Gatsby invites Nick to go flying with him the next morning, but Nick politely declines. Gatsby then requests to speak to Jordan alone. This is very important. During this conversation Jordan discovers that Gatsby knows Daisy from a few years back, and Gatsby discribes to Jordan how he still loves Dasiy. Jordan also finds out that these parties and the rich lifestyle are all for the purpose of impressing Dasiy. Jordan later tells Nick all of this information. Gatsby then wants Nick to set up a date between himself and Dasiy. Nick sets up a date, and while on this date Daisy and Gatsby fall in love again. Dasiy and Nick then have a continuing affair. Tom eventually becomes curious about Dasiy's new relatioship with Gatsby and finds out that they are having an affair. Tom is angry about his even though he is in an affair as well. When Tom confronts both Gatsby and Dasiy with his knowledge of their affair Daisy relizes that she still loves Tom and is over Gatsby. On the way back to East Egg, Nick, Jordan, and Tom realize that Gatsby's car hit Myrtle and killed her. They find out through Gatsby that Daisy was driving the car when it hit and killed Myrtle. Gatsby plans to take the responsibility for hitting and killing her though. The next day Tom tells Myrtle's husband, Wilson, that Gatsby hit her with the car. Wilson then goes to Gatsby's house and shots Gatsby in his swimming pool and then kills himself in a murder-suicide. Two years later Nick organizes a funeral for Gatsby. Almost no one comes except for Nick, Gatsby's father, Owl Eye's, and a few servants. Nick becomes very upset over this and decides to move back to the midwest. The story is over.
The American Dream through the eyes of:
Nick: Nick wants to become rich. His American dream is to become wealthy and live the high life. He is attracted to the money but not the drama that comes with it. He is honest and wants to make honest money. Nick's vision of the American Dream is to become nouve riche.
Tom: Tom wants to have two women in his life and live lavishly. Tom wants to keep his marraige with Daisy and also to have his affair with Myrtle. Tom's vision of the American dream is to have both women happily in his life and live in luxury.
Daisy: Daisy wants to live care free. Daisy just wants someone to take care of her and to love her. She isn't really attatched to any one man, she just wants to be taken care of. Daisy's vision of the American Dream is to live care free with someone to give her assets to live how she wants.
Gatsby: Gatsby loves Daisy. He dosen't care about money or friendship, all he wants is Daisy. Everything that he did and worked for in his life was directed at impressing Daisy. The parties and money were just to impress Daisy. His life was impressing Daisy. Gatsby's vision of the American Dream was to work for the love of Daisy.
Wilson: Wilson is obsessed with Myrtle. He is consumed with her. He is heart broken when he learns that Myrtle was having an affair. He loved Myrtle so much that he murdered her affairee and then killed himself. Wilson's vision of the American Dream was loving Myrtle.
My point of veiw:
I find this book to be considered one of the greatest American classic books ever written due to the bluntness of the era and how people truely behave. The Great Gatsby shows how the 1920's was a new era in America, filled with crime, love, and drama. Bootlegging was common, and affairs talked about openly. The times were portrayed with detail and truth and that is why I beleive The Great Gatsby is considered a great American classic. This book also showed all aspects of how people interact with each other. Unlike some books itr showed you how people interact with each other and how they dealt with their problems and their dreams. Every character in the book dealt with an obsession or problem, and this book showed how each dealt with their issues. The book showed how the characters actually dealt with their issues and not nessacarily how they should be dealt with in theory. I loved this about the book. That is the main reason why I found this book to be considered a great American classic.
